While he has written on numerous major European thinkers such as Descartes, Kant, Hegel, Heidegger, etc., he has also responded to many key twentieth-century French contemporaries, such as Jacques Lacan, Georges Bataille, Maurice Blanchot, and Jacques Derrida. The philosopher’s most important topics include: the question of community, the nature of the political, German Romanticism, psychoanalysis, literature, technology, and hermeneutics. Jean-Luc Nancy began publishing his work in the 1970s. Two of his earliest books, Le titre de la lettre: Une lecture de Lacan (1972; The Title of the Letter: A Reading of Lacan) and L’absolu littéraire: Théorie de la littérature du romantisme allemand (1978; The Literary Absolute: The Theory of Literature in German Romanticism), were co-written with Philippe Lacoue-Labarthe. Le titre de la lettre is a close reading of Jacques Lacan’s essay “The Agency of the Letter in the Unconscious or Reason Since Freud.” According to Nancy and Lacoue-Labarthe, the Lacanian discourse remains metaphysical because meaning is understood as the origin of the play of signifiers. In 1980, Jean-Luc Nancy and Philippe Lacoue-Labarthe organised a Cérisy-Colloquium on Derrida’s work, Les fins de l’homme (The Ends of Man). This conference also constituted the beginning of an in-depth exploration of the notion of the political and a beginning for posing the question about the interconnections between deconstruction and politics. In the same year, they also formed the Centre de recherches philosophiques sur le politique. Two books, Rejouer le politique (1981) and Le retrait du politique (1983), were results of the Centre’s work (most of its important papers were translated into English in 1997 as Retreating the Political). While the Centre was closed in 1984, Nancy continued to investigate the questions of community and politics. The result of this investigation became La communauté désoeuvrée (1986; The Inoperative Community), an examination of the idea of community. In this well-known work, "Nancy shows that [community] is neither a project of fusion nor production. Rather, he argues, community can be defined through the political nature of its resistance against immanent power." In 1987, Jean-Luc Nancy became docteur d'état in Toulouse, with recognition from the jury (among the jury members were Jean-François Lyotard and Jacques Derrida). His supervisor was Gérard Granel. Nancy's dissertation was published as L'expérience de la liberté (1988; The Experience of Freedom), a study focusing on the notion of freedom in Kant, Schelling, and Hegel. It also marks Nancy’s return to a critical engagement with Heidegger’s fundamental ontology and especially with the notion of Mitsein or “being-with.” The most important work from this period of Nancy’s career is Être singulier pluriel (1996; Being Singular Plural), which continues to explore some of the crucial themes presented in L'expérience de la liberté and which, in addition to the same-titled essay, Être singulier pluriel, consists of five shorter essays. The key argument of the book is again that our being is always “being-with” and that our existence is always already co-existence. Together with the exploration of this central concern, Nancy engages other important topics, among them national sovereignty, war and technology, and identity politics.

An overview of research being conducted by Dr. Eric Ballot, Professor and Physical Internet Chair (Département Economie, Management, Société), Mines Paristech, as part of the Georgia Tech Physical Internet Center seminar series (www.picenter.gatech.edu). SEMINAR DESCRIPTION The Physical Internet (PI) opens many more options to deliver goods to the end destination, thanks to interconnected services. To exploit such opportunities, routing algorithms must be developed at different levels to make the PI work. In this lecture, the levels will be defined and results obtained will be compared to traditional dedicated solutions. Two main point of views will be distinguished: the shipper (how to specify routing request) and the services provider (how to publish services and make agreements). The main PI principles will be presented as well as their impacts on algorithms, data requirements and performance. Initial results show the potential, but also uncover many research opportunities for services providers to develop new services and shippers to operate their supply chain with the PI. ABOUT ERIC BALLOT Graduated from Ecole Normale Supérieure de Cachan, 1988-1993, Agrégation 1991, Master from Panthéon-Sorbonne university 1993, PhD from Ecole Normale Supérieure de Cachan (Mechanical Engineering) 1995 and Habilitation à Diriger des Recherche Institut Polytechnique Grenoble 2009. Research areas: Simulation and optimization of industrial and logistic operations, Models for sustainable supply chain and logistic, Physical Internet, Theory and models for utility, choice and inventory management in supply networks.

http://southasia.berkeley.edu/ Talk by archaeologist and art historian, Osmund Bopearachchi, Director of Research, French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), Paris, and currently the Numata Visiting Professor of Buddhist Studies at UC Berkeley. Talk Abstract Founded in the fourth century BCE by King Pandukabhaya, Anuradhapura remained the capital of the island for almost fifteen centuries, making it one of the most stable and long-lived political and urban centers of South and South-East Asia. As recent archaeological research has shown, Anuradhapura became a flourishing inland capital thanks to its location on the Aruvi Ari River (Malvatu Oya) linking it to Manthai, the most active port in ancient Sri Lanka. The ancient site of Anuradhapura and its surrounding monastic complexes covers an area of over forty square kilometres. There has been much controversy over the focal point of the urban center. According to some historians, the Mahāvihāra, with the scared Bodhi-Tree and the Ruawanvalimahāsaye, was the center of the city and, for others, the fortified citadel. The sacred area, composed of impressive monastic establishments, was much larger than the citadel where the royal palace and the center of administration were presumably situated. Despite several archaeological missions, the carefully planned city and its suburbs described in the Mahāvaṃśa, the great chronicle of the island, remain to be discovered. Aside from the palace built by King Vijayabahu I (circa 1055-1110 CE), neither the ancient palaces of renowned kings nor the administrative buildings have been discovered within the city limits. By contrast, the Buddhist monastic complexes of Mahāvihāra, Jetavanaramavihāra, Abhayagirivihāra, Dakkhinavihāra, and Mirisvativihāra, surrounding the citadel, contain imposing stūpas, bodhigharas (bodhi shrines), paṭimāgharas (image houses), sannipātasālās (assembly halls), danasālās (alms halls) and pancavasas (residences of the monks). This talk discussed the nature of the physical growth of the city, its legitimacy and authority, and the discrepancies between the archaeological reality and literary evidence. Speaker Bio Osmund Bopearachchi is a Director of Research at the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) in its Hellenism and Oriental Civilisations program (UMR 8546/5), and teaches Central Asian and South-Asian archaeology and art history at the Paris IVSorbonne University. Professor Bopearachchi holds a BA from the University of Kelaniya (Sri Lanka), a BA honors, (MA), M.Phil., Ph.D from the Paris I-Sorbonne University, and a Higher Doctorate (Habilitation) from the Paris IV-Sorbonne University. He has published nine books, edited six others, and published 130 articles in international journals. Currently the Trung Lam Visiting Scholar in Central Asian Art and Archaeology (20102012) at the University of California, Berkeley, Professor Bopearachchi is working on a new catalogue of Graeco-Bactrian and Indo-Greek Coins, as well as the publication of a selection of hitherto unknown masterpieces from Gandhāra and Greater Gandhāra dispersed in museums and private collections in Japan, Europe, Canada, and the United States of America.

Extracts - Time of Trees II (2017) for piano, finger gestures of two pianists and shadows World-Premiere by SU Lifang and PAN I-Yi at the National Recital Hall, October 30th, 2017. This video is the World-Premiered version. Work commissioned by National Tainan University of the Arts, Taiwan. The source of inspiration for this piece, divided into five bagatelles for a choreographic gesture of the hands, is the result of my own practice of Johann Sebastian Bach's Goldberg Variations. Bagatelle I - Variation 14 Bagatelle II - Variation 29 Bagatelle III - Variation 23 Bagatelle IV - Variation 13 Bagatelle V - Variation 20 The visual and auditory compositional elements evolve through the dialogue between musicians and their projected shadows in a space created for the interplay and spatialization of sounds. The intuitive perception of space and time is conceived by: movement without sound, sound without movement, sound and movement, and no sound or movement. (Movement - No Sound, No Movement - Sound, Movement - Sound, No Movement - No Sound) Designing the lighting schema and composing the shadows are the result of synesthetic phenomenon. First, I deconstructed the hand gestures in Bach's Variations to establish a range of visual elements. I then used this same analytical method to initiate a new piece with musical elements. The transcription from sound to shadow is as if light and shadow were inseparable from sound: subjective, objective, morphological, phenomenological, horizontal/vertical, continuous/discontinuous, narrative etc. Following this step, I then organized the musical and shaded texture in the investigation of  dynamics, breathing, and continuity of gestures and sound. The use of the shadow gestures is an important, yet indirect, contact - an essential aspect maintaining the dialogues between musicians, audience, composer and the work itself throughout entirety of the performance. - LIAO Lin-Ni --- * Work published by Maison ONA - https://www.maison-ona.com/catalog-0113ONA * LIAO Lin-Ni's website - https://paris-sorbonne.academia.edu/LiaoLinNi
