Meillassoux proposes in his book, After Finitude, that we must relinquish the transcendental which would also mean a break with Kant. This break, for Malabou, also brings us to a larger question which deals with the future of Continental philosophy. Can we continue to do Continental philosophy, which essentially begins with Kant and therefore hinges on an acceptance of the transcendental; or, if we assent, must we begin to move towards the Analytic tradition? Malabou lays out and critiques the arguments of Meillassoux, shows existing critiques of Kant and the transcendental which have come from the Continental tradition, then reveal...

http://www.egs.edu Achille Mbembe, Professor of Philosophy at The European Graduate School / EGS. Valetta/Malta. October 16, 2017. Public Open Lecture. Achille Mbembe is a philosopher, political scientist, and public intellectual. He obtained his doctoral degree at the Université Paris 1 (Panthéon-Sorbonne) in 1989 and subsequently obtained the D.E.A. in Political Science at the Institut d'études politiques, Paris. During his time in France, Jean-Marc Ela, Jean Leca and Jean-François Bayart had a profound influence on him. Mbembe is a Research Professor of History and Politics at the Wits Institute for Social and Economic Research in Johannesburg, South Africa and a Visiting Professor in the Department of Romance Studies at the Franklin Humanities Institute, Duke University. He has also held appointments at Columbia University, Berkeley, Yale University, and the University of California. In the spring of 2016, he will be a visiting professor at Harvard University. Achille Mbembe’s research interests lie in the social sciences and African history and politics. More precisely, Mbembe investigates the “postcolony” that comes after decolonization. He is especially interested in the emergence of “Afro-cosmopolitan culture,” together with the artistic practices that are associated with it. However, he has also critically explored the notion of Johannesburg as a metropolitan city and the work of Frantz Fanon. His seminal work De la postcolonie. Essai sur l’imagination politique dans l’Afrique contemporaine (On the Postcolony) was translated into English in 2001 and published by the University of California Press. This work has also been republished in an African edition by Wits University Press, and contains a new preface by Achille Mbembe. In On the Postcolony, Mbembe attempts to renew and reinterpret our understanding of power and subjectivity in contemporary Africa and to subvert some key assumptions of postcolonial theory. He claims that Africa is no longer the “colony” that Frantz Fanon described in his work Wretched of the Earth. The central gesture of Mbembe’s work is to identify societies that recently emerged from the experience of colonization and the violence that is the main characteristic of this experience. The goal of his work is to change the perception of Africa and to move away from the dead-end of postcolonial theory to a more dynamic way of thinking that will take into account the complexities of post-colonial Africa. In his interview with the French magazine Esprit, Achille Mbembe describes his book in the following way: “In many respects my book adopts a different approach from that of most postcolonial thinking, if only over the privileged position accorded by the latter to questions of identity and difference, and over the central role that the theme of resistance plays in it. There is a difference, to my mind, between thinking about the "postcolony" and "postcolonial" thought. The question running through my book is this: "What is 'today', and what are we, today?" What are the lines of fragility, the lines of precariousness, the fissures in contemporary African life? And, possibly, how could what is be no more, how could it give birth to something else? And so, if you like, it's a way of reflecting on the fractures, on what remains of the promise of life when the enemy is no longer the colonist in a strict sense, but the "brother"? So the book is a critique of the African discourse on community and brotherhood.”

http://www.egs.edu Jean-Luc Nancy, Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel Chair and Professor of Philosophy at The European Graduate School / EGS. Saas Fee, July 1st. 2016. Jean-Luc Nancy graduated with a degree in philosophy from the Sorbonne (Paris) in 1962, where he worked with Georges Canguilhem. During his time at the Sorbonne, he also worked with Paul Ricoeur, who supervised his MA thesis on Hegel’s philosophy of religion. He briefly taught in Colmar before becoming an assistant at the Institut de philosophie at the University of Strasbourg in 1968. In 1973, he completed his doctoral dissertation on Kant’s analogical discourse under the supervision of Paul Ricoeur. In the same year, Nancy became maître-assistant (later maître de conférences) at the Université des Sciences Humaines in Strasbourg, where he remained a professor until his retirement in 2002. He has been a guest professor at numerous universities, among them the Freie Universität Berlin, the University of California, Irvine, and the University of California, Berkeley. Nancy’s research is very diverse and his work challenges the modern idea of systematicity. While he has written on numerous major European thinkers such as Descartes, Kant, Hegel, Heidegger, etc., he has also responded to many key twentieth-century French contemporaries, such as Jacques Lacan, Georges Bataille, Maurice Blanchot, and Jacques Derrida. The philosopher’s most important topics include: the question of community, the nature of the political, German Romanticism, psychoanalysis, literature, technology, and hermeneutics. Jean-Luc Nancy began publishing his work in the 1970s. Two of his earliest books, Le titre de la lettre: Une lecture de Lacan (1972; The Title of the Letter: A Reading of Lacan) and L’absolu littéraire: Théorie de la littérature du romantisme allemand (1978; The Literary Absolute: The Theory of Literature in German Romanticism), were co-written with Philippe Lacoue-Labarthe. Le titre de la lettre is a close reading of Jacques Lacan’s essay “The Agency of the Letter in the Unconscious or Reason Since Freud.” According to Nancy and Lacoue-Labarthe, the Lacanian discourse remains metaphysical because meaning is understood as the origin of the play of signifiers. In 1980, Jean-Luc Nancy and Philippe Lacoue-Labarthe organised a Cérisy-Colloquium on Derrida’s work, Les fins de l’homme (The Ends of Man). This conference also constituted the beginning of an in-depth exploration of the notion of the political and a beginning for posing the question about the interconnections between deconstruction and politics. In the same year, they also formed the Centre de recherches philosophiques sur le politique. Two books, Rejouer le politique (1981) and Le retrait du politique (1983), were results of the Centre’s work (most of its important papers were translated into English in 1997 as Retreating the Political). While the Centre was closed in 1984, Nancy continued to investigate the questions of community and politics. The result of this investigation became La communauté désoeuvrée (1986; The Inoperative Community), an examination of the idea of community. In this well-known work, "Nancy shows that [community] is neither a project of fusion nor production. Rather, he argues, community can be defined through the political nature of its resistance against immanent power." In 1987, Jean-Luc Nancy became docteur d'état in Toulouse, with recognition from the jury (among the jury members were Jean-François Lyotard and Jacques Derrida). His supervisor was Gérard Granel. Nancy's dissertation was published as L'expérience de la liberté (1988; The Experience of Freedom), a study focusing on the notion of freedom in Kant, Schelling, and Hegel. It also marks Nancy’s return to a critical engagement with Heidegger’s fundamental ontology and especially with the notion of Mitsein or “being-with.” The most important work from this period of Nancy’s career is Être singulier pluriel (1996; Being Singular Plural), which continues to explore some of the crucial themes presented in L'expérience de la liberté and which, in addition to the same-titled essay, Être singulier pluriel, consists of five shorter essays. The key argument of the book is again that our being is always “being-with” and that our existence is always already co-existence. Together with the exploration of this central concern, Nancy engages other important topics, among them national sovereignty, war and technology, and identity politics.

http://www.egs.edu/ Philosopher Jean-Luc Nancy, French philosopher and thinker talking about shattered love, demand, desire, lack, impossibility, heart, body, deconstruction, christianity, religion, philosophy, metaphysics, Jacques Lacan, community, civilization. Public open lecture for the students of the Division of Philosophy, Art & Critical Thought at the European Graduate School EGS, Saas-Fee, Switzerland. 2001. Jean-Luc Nancy (b. 1940) is a French philosopher. He is the Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel Chair and a professor of philosophy at The European Graduate School / EGS. Nancy graduated with a degree in philosophy from the Sorbonne (Paris) in 1962, where he worked with Georges Canguilhem. It also marks Nancy’s return to a critical engagement with Heidegger’s fundamental ontology and especially with the notion of Mitsein or “being-with.” In the 1990s, Nancy started a new project that he entitled “a deconstruction of Christianity.” The results were two books: La Déclosion: Déconstruction du christianisme 1 (2005; Dis-Enclosure: The Deconstruction of Christianity) and L’Adoration: Déconstruction du christianisme 2 (2010; Adoration: The Deconstruction of Christianity II). However, during this period, Nancy also experienced a serious illness. He received a heart transplant in the beginning of the 1990s in the midst of his long-term fight with cancer. His short text L’intrus (2000; The Intruder) offers a personal account of his condition, and it inspired the film of the same name directed by Claire Denis in 2004. Alongside his collaborations with different artists (e.g., choreographer Mathilde Monnier), Jean-Luc Nancy writes on contemporary art and regularly contributes to exhibition catalogues. He has written on the artists On Kawara (Technique du présent: essai sur On Kawara; 1997) and Jean Michel Atlan (Atlan: Les Détrempes; 2010), and his book L’evidence du film (2001; The Evidence of Film) is on the work of the Iranian filmmaker, Abbas Kiarostami. While Nancy’s most important philosophical reflections on art can be read in the book Les Muses (1994; The Muses), he does not limit himself to theory and criticism, but has also written poetry and theatrical texts, including an adaptation of Goethe's Faust, Part One for an installation by the artist Claudio Parmiggiani.

http://egs.edu/ Achille Mbembe. Public open lecture for the students of the Division of Philosophy, Art & Critical Thought at the European Graduate School EGS, Saas-Fee/Switzerland and Valetta/Malta. March 27 2016.

In this lecture, Anne Dufourmantelle discusses the ideology of security, libido, the Lacanian discourses, the mirror stage, the super-ego, consciousness and the dialectic of master and slave in relationship to Leo Tolstoy, Hegel, Immanuel Levinas, Sigmund Freud, Jacques Lacan and Melanie Klein focusing on desire, dependency, negativity, the uncanny, being lost, self-recognition and fear. Public open lecture for the students and faculty of the European Graduate School EGS Media and Communication Studies department program Saas-Fee Switzerland Europe. 2011. Anne Dufourmantelle. Anne Dufourmantelle, Ph.D., is a French psychoanalyst, philosopher and author. Anne studied medicine and philosophy for two years in Paris and completed her doctorate (Ph.D) at Paris-IV university (Sorbonne). Her thesis was entitled : La vocation prophétique de la philosophie (The Prophetic Vocation of Philosophy) with studies on Soeren Kierkegaard, Friedrich Nietzsche, Emmanuel Levinas and Patocka. It was published some years later by les éditions du Cerf and received the Academie Française for philosophy. During Anne's studies at la Sorbonne, she had the opportunity to take one year off to study "humanities" at Brown university, with Georges Morgan. She translated Nelson Goodman's _Language of Art_, and and wrote an essay on "The Structure of Appearance," which would lead her, upon returning to France, to teach at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure d'Architecture de Paris La Villette (School of Architecture (UP6) of La Villette, for five years a seminar on Aesthetics and "thinking architecture". This experience also drove Anne to publish some dialogues between architects and philosophers, such as, for example, between Christian de Portzamparc and Philippe Sollers (2004) or between Jean Baudrillard and Jean Nouvel (2000). Then Anne went on to direct a non-fiction collection as a publisher for Calmann-Levy on the field of philosophy. Anne studied with Jacques Derrida whom she had just met ("On Hospitality", Calmann-Levy, 1998 -- 17 translations), and also Vaclav Havel, Alain Didier-Weill, Alessandro Baricco, Julia Kristeva, Antonio Negri, George Steiner, Peter Sloterdijk, Frédéric Boyer, Belinda Cannone, etc... (more than 50 books published since). Then Anne left Calmann-Levy and continued with Stock (also in the Hachette group) the same type of collection, untitled "L'autre pensée", again in the field of philosophy, publishing thinkers like Slavoj Zizek, Noam Chomsky, Jacques Derrida again, Avital Ronell (2 books translated) -- Theodor Adorno, Rabaté, as well as some texts in psychoanalysis, literature studies, anthropology, sociology. After earning her doctorate Anne began working as an analyst, member of the Cercle Freudien (Paris) and Après-Coup association (New-York) more or less in a Lacanian direction, but also with a strong link to the "English" Freudian school : Bion, Winicott, Klein, etc. After the publication of her thesis, Anne continued her writing in the psychoanalytic field. She published such books as: La sauvagerie maternelle ("The Savage Mother") or La femme et le Sacrifice, ("Women and Sacrifice) and others. Two books were an exception : Blind date, sex and philosophy and Une question d'enfant.

Malabou lays out and critiques the arguments of Meillassoux, shows existing critiques of Kant and the transcendental which have come from the Continental tradition, then reveals how she would answer this question which has been put forward. Public open lecture for the students and faculty of the European Graduate School EGS Media and Communication Studies department program Saas-Fee Switzerland Europe. 2014. Catherine Malabou, Ph.D., is an important contemporary French philosopher. Catherine Malabou was born in 1959 and is a former student at the École normal supérieure (ENS) of Fontenay-Saint-Cloud in Lyon, France. ENS schools are regarded as some of the most prestigious French schools for humanities studies. Before that Catherine Malabou was educated in Paris at the renown Sorbonne University. Catherine Malabou passed her agrégation in philosophy (French University high-level competitive examination for the recruitment of professors and often the gateway to Ph.D. study). Catherine Malabou wrote her dissertation on Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (1770-1831) under the direction of the critical French philosopher Jacques Derrida (1930-2004), completing it on December 15 1994. The thesis was published in 1996 under the title “L’Avenir de Hegel, plasticité, temporalité, dialectique” and was prefaced by Derrida with a text entitled “Le temps des adieux: Heidegger (lu par) Hegel (lu par) Malabou” (“A time for farewells: Heidegger (read by) Hegel (read by) Malabou”). Catherine Malabou’s doctoral dissertation was eventually published in both Japanese and English (2005, “The Future of Hegel: Plasticity, Temporality and Dialectic”). More recently, Catherine Malabou published with the eminent American critical thinker Judith Butler (1956-) a book in French entitled “Sois mon corps” (2010), not yet published in English but which can translate as “Be My Body”. The two thinkers give us a contemporary reading of domination and servitude in Hegel. They ask about who has not ever dreamed or feared, desired or dreaded to delegate one’s body? That is to say, asking or ordering someone else: be my body, carry it in my place, feed it, cultivate it, shape it. According to Judith Butler and Catherine Malabou such request and order are those which the master gives the slave in Hegel’s “The Phenomenology of Spirit” (1807). In this way, the dialectic of domination and servitude must be understood as a scene of delegation and denial of the body. But they also want to ask two opposite and yet inextricable questions: do we ever manage to completely detach oneself from one’s body? And on the contrary, are we ever completely attached to it? From Hegel to Michel Foucault (1926-1984), Jacques Derrida and Alexandre Kojève (1902-1968), these issues are tackled in all their modalities.
